The Top 3 Questions You Should be able to Answer at Any Interview
1) The Question: So Tell Me About Yourself
What they Really Mean: The interviewer is looking for a brief bio that incorporates your experience and hobbies. Be sure to keep your answer short, about 1 minute or less. This is one of the most common questions you’ll hear in any interview. As a result, it’s a good idea to have an answer prepared before you walk into the interview.
Let’s say you’re applying for a welding position in Hartford, WI. In this case, you’d mention what type of schooling/experience you have, any hobbies related to welding and a brief mention of what attracted you to welding in the first place. If you’re new to this type of work, just share a brief summary of any related experience and what led you to this type of work.
2) The Question: What Are Your Strengths and Weaknesses?
What they Really Mean: They want to know “Can we count on you to do this job properly?”
This question is difficult for most applicants to answer, but it doesn’t have to be. Let’s start with the tough part of this question first – your weaknesses. Your best bet is to answer this question in relation to the job – and choose your best weakness. For example, let’s use the example above again to illustrate what this means. You’re interviewing for a welding position in Hartford, but you have no past experience in this line of work.Start with a confession:
“Since I haven’t worked in this field before, some people might consider that a weakness. But I have experience in other areas and I’ve proven to be highly trainable and open minded.
End on a positive note: “I’m ready to learn the job the way you want it done, not the way I think it should be done. Also, my years of experience with on-the-job training have given me the ability to learn very quickly on the job.”
For your strengths, share a brief snapshot of your skills that best fit the job you’re applying for. If you are experienced as a CNC operator, mention you have great attention to detail. Match up your strengths with the job description you’re interviewing for.
3) The Question: Why do you want to Work for Us?
What they really mean: In this question, they want to know 3 things:
1) How much you know about the company
2) Why you think you are a good fit for the job
3) What you can bring to the team
Although your initial reaction might be “because you have an opening and I need a job”, that response won’t earn you any points in an interview. Instead, do your research. Visit the company’s website and Facebook page. Make sure you know about their history, focus and their business in general. The interviewer wants to know you’ve given some thought to where you want to work – and that you haven’t blasted out your resume to any company with a job opening.
Here are some sample answers to get you started:
“Based on the research I’ve done, this company has been located in Hartford now for over 50 years and your company is an industry leader. I am excited about some future projects you have planned and I’d love to be part of your team.”
“This is the company I’ve been looking for. I’ve heard you treat employees well and I know I can put my background, experience and skills to good use to make things happen.”
“I’ve researched your company’s Facebook page and I love how you are engaged with the community. This company struck me as the kind of place where I can fit in and become a productive member of your team.”
A little preparation can go a long way. If you don’t let these questions catch you off guard during your next interview, you’ll stand a great chance of standing out from the crowd and getting the job.
