Whether you’re reentering the workforce, looking for a career shift, or seeking upward mobility, looking for a job nowadays requires a blend of traditional strategies and modern adaptations in the job search market

The hiring process is more digitized, competitive, and fast-moving than ever before. With the right strategy and mindset, you can position yourself for success and find opportunities that align with your career goals. In this blog, we will share our best job searching tips and answer questions about struggles in the job search process.

Job Searching Tips

1. Hone in on Your Career Goals

Before applying to any job, take the time to reflect on what you want– and what you don’t want– in your next role.

Ask yourself:

  • What kind of work energizes you?
  • Which industries or companies align with your values and goals?
  • What are your must-haves (ex: salary, benefits, location, etc.)?
  • Where do you see yourself in the next 2-5 years?

Create a personal checklist of goals and deal breakers. Narrowing your scope not only saves time, but it also helps you change your approach to the roles that fit your scope. You can also explore career assessments or consult with recruiters to identify roles that match your strengths and interests.

2. Optimize Your Resume for Relevancy

A lot of employers often use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen resumes, so formatting and content are more important than ever.

Resume updating tips:

  • Customize each resume to the specific job description.
  • Incorporate keywords from the posting.
  • Use clear section headers and a clean, professional layout.
  • Highlight achievements, not just duties– use metrics when possible.
  • Keep it concise! Typically, one page for early-career professionals and no more than two for seasoned candidates.

Another idea is to have a friend or mentor review your resume or work with a staffing agency to get professional feedback. Learn more about resume tips with our blog, Resume Tips for Standing Out and Navigating Employment Gaps

3. Enhance Your LinkedIn Presence

LinkedIn is your digital portfolio. Some recruiters check your profile before scheduling an interview, sometimes even before reading your resume.

To boost your profile:

  • Use a professional headshot and a compelling headline (not just your job title).
  • Write a strong “About” section that shares your career narrative. Think of the “About” section as if someone were to introduce you before speaking, what would you want people to know?
  • Add skills and endorsements, and request recommendations from colleagues.
  • Add featured articles, images, or posts that are relevant to past career accomplishments or work you have done.
  • Share relevant content or engage with industry news and posts to show you’re active and informed.
  • Turn on the “Open to Work” feature if you’re actively searching for a job.

A strong LinkedIn profile can attract employers’ attention, build your professional brand, and expand your network beyond physical conversations.

4. Check Niche Job Board Listings

The best places to start are your generic job boards like Indeed, LinkedIn, or ZipRecruiter, but don’t stop there. Industry-specific or regional job boards often list less saturated, high-quality openings. At Staffing Support Specialists, we have our own Job Board that potential candidates can look through, or join our talent pool (located at the bottom of the job board) to be considered for future positions.

Staffing Support Specialists primarily serve these industries:

Make sure to use filters to zero in on your ideal job type, schedule, and experience level, regardless of what job board you are on. Also, remember to sign up for job alerts (text or email) to stay informed.

5. Leverage Your Network & Attend Networking Events

It’s said that 80% of jobs are filled through networking. This makes leveraging your existing connections, including friends, past coworkers, and mentors, all the more important. Don’t hesitate to reach out to new contacts, too.

Networking strategies:

  • Attend industry events, meetups, or webinars (check resources like Eventbrite for events in your area).
  • Ask for informational interviews with professionals in roles you admire.
  • Join online communities (ex: Slack groups, Reddit forums, LinkedIn Groups, etc.).
  • Let your contacts know you are looking! Half the battle is just getting your name out there– don’t be shy about your goals and what you are looking for.

6. Prepare for Interviews

A well-prepared interviewee stands out. This includes both virtual and in-person interviews. Now, you can’t always prepare for what interview questions will be asked, but you can prepare how you will answer similar questions.

Interview preparation checklist:

  • Research the company thoroughly. What is their mission statement? Do they have any recent news? How does their website look? What do they do?
  • Prepare yourself to answer questions by looking up common mock interview questions.
  • Practice the S.T.A.R. method of answering questions (Situation, Task, Action taken, Result)
  • Have questions ready to ask the interviewer (this shows engagement). If culture is important to you, ask about the company culture. If work-life balance is important to you, ask about time management and responsibilities.
  • Practice your pitch: “Tell me about yourself” is your first impression moment.
  • Be mindful of “filler” words you may use when you are nervous. Do you say “uhm” a lot? Do you use “like” a lot? Try to remember to slow down and speak intentionally and confidently.
  • Before a virtual interview, test your tech setup and make sure everything is running smoothly.
  • Remember the “Three A’s” – Attendance, Appearance and Attitude!  In today’s market, being on time is critical.  Showing up well-groomed and “dressing for success” demonstrates that you care and the job is important to you.  Having a positive, engaging attitude shows you will most likely be a strong team player that adds value and can motivate others.

7. Work on Upskilling

In the meantime, you can work on upskilling for the new job you want. In a competitive market, having up-to-date skills can be the key to standing out.

Skills that are in demand:

  • Tech, AI literacy, data analysis, CRM tools
  • Remote work and management
  • Time management and communication platform experience (Slack, Notion)

You can use platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, or Skillshare to stay sharp on learning new skills. Additionally, consider certifications that align with your desired role.

8. Stay Resilient and Positive Through Your Search

Finally, job searching can be emotionally draining, especially when rejections start to roll in. It is important to protect your mindset, regroup, and decompress when needed.

Tips to manage the emotional side of job searching:

  • Set small daily or weekly goals to stay motivated.
  • Track your applications and follow-ups.
  • Reward yourself for effort, not just outcomes.
  • Take breaks and do some hobbies, or get active.
  • Talk to someone: a friend, family member, or mentor about your frustrations.

Remember, you are not alone in this job search. Having a supportive network can make a difference in staying resilient and positive in your job search. The right role is out there. Consistency, positivity, and flexibility will help you get there faster.

Why Am I Struggling To Find A New Job?

If you’ve been on the hunt for a while without success, don’t panic. Many job seekers face obstacles, and often, just a few small tweaks to your strategy can create big breakthroughs.

Job Mismatch

If you’re applying for roles outside your experience level or skillset, employers may pass on your application. But don’t count yourself out entirely.

Job mismatch solutions:

  • Broaden your scope slightly. Look at adjacent roles in other industries where your skills are relevant.
  • Consider temporary or contract roles that let you build experience.
  • Work with a staffing agency that can match you with opportunities you might not have considered.
  • Be open to learning. Sometimes the perfect job isn’t what you originally expected and might be something better than you expected.
  • Include transferrable skill sets on your resume

Think of it like trying a new food dish, you won’t know if you will enjoy it until you give it a chance.

Job Search Fatigue

Endless applications with little to no feedback can be extremely frustrating. Many companies receive hundreds of applications and may not respond unless you’re shortlisted. Make sure to take care of your mental health. Take breaks and do something that makes you feel better to avoid burnout.
